Burroughs Wellcome Career Award at the Scientific Interface

In order to apply, you must have completed at least 1 and no more than 4 years of postdoctoral research by the January deadline. 

Funding Amount: Up to $500,000 over 5 years.
Application Deadline: Preproposals are due around Sept. 1, and you must submit a full proposal in January.

Burroughs Welcome's Career Awards for Medical Scientists,

For physician/scientists, this mentored research development awards aims to bridge the last years of postdoctoral/fellowship training and first years of a faculty position. 

Funding Amount: $700,000 over five years
Application Deadline: Opens in June, ends in October

Hanna H. Gray Fellowship from the HMMI (Howard Hughes Medical Institute)

Women and minorities (Hispanic, Black, Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander, or American Indian/Alaska Native), apparently of any nationality (but check with program officers), can apply in late Ph.D. or beginning postdoc years for postdoctoral work in the U.S. 

Funding Amount: $70,000 annually
Application Deadline: Applications open in September and are due in January.

Helen Hay Whitney Research Fellowships

These fellowships are for initial stages of postdoctoral work in biomedical sciences. Apply in final stages of Ph.D. or first year of postdoc. Open to any citizenship, although "We expect that most applicants will reside in North America at the time of application."

Funding Amount: $54,000 annually (varies slightly per year)
Application Deadline: Application closes mid-June.

James McDonnell Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards in Studying Complex Systems

They don't seem to define what "complex systems science" is but Elad Ganmor from Elad Schneidman's lab got one so apparently at least some forms of theoretical neuroscience will qualify. 

Funding Amount:  $200,000 for 2-3 years.
Application Deadline: Application deadline in June for someone expecting to complete the Ph.D. in the following calendar year.

NIH F32 award

Postdoctoral fellowship to enhance the research training of promising postdoctoral candidates who have the potential to become productive, independent investigators in scientific health-related research fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers.

NIH K25 award

It is only offered by some of the NIH institutes, and each seems to have different requirements, so you need to talk with the relevant program officers to get details and see if your situation fits. 

Funding Amount: The funding amount varies based on the program.
Application Deadline: There are deadlines every 4 months, please view the website to see which is applicable for you.

EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship

Funds young scientists and supports their internationally mobile careers.

Gruss Lipper Postdoctoral Fellowship, EGL (Israeli citizenship required)

Supports outstanding young Israeli scientists who have the opportunity to work in a biomedical research laboratory in the United States.

Human Frontiers Science Program (HFSP) postdoctoral fellowships

You must be changing fields, either within the life sciences or coming from outside the life sciences. You cannot have started working in your postdoc lab before April of your application year and may not have spent more than 12 months total in the U.S. (or more generally, in the new country) in education or training by April of the following year.  

Funding Amount: The funding amount varies.
Application Deadline: Applications open in July, deadline in August.

Life Sciences Research Fellowship

Identifies and funds exceptional young scientists at a critical juncture of their training in all areas of basic life sciences. 

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions

Supports researchers at all stages of their careers, regardless of age and nationality. Researchers working across all disciplines are eligible for funding. The MSCA also supports cooperation between industry and academia and innovative training to enhance employability and career development.

Funding Amount: Varies based on host country
Application Deadline: Opens in April, ends in September

NIH K99 Pathway to Independence award

This mentored research development award supports the last 2 years of postdoctoral work and the first 3 years of a faculty position. Generally must be no more than 5 years since receipt of the Ph.D. at time of application, some exceptions.

These NIH grants have 3 deadlines/year (every 4 months).

Society in Science

The Branco Weiss Fellowship awards young researchers around the world with a generous personal research grant, giving them the freedom to work on whatever topic they choose anywhere in the world, for up to five years. 

Graduate Students

HHMI Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study

Apply in 2nd or 3rd grad year. For members of underrepresented groups, or alumni of HHMI EXROP, who are citizens, permanent residents, or other immigrants to the US. You and your mentor must be nominated by Columbia (but you have to apply within Columbia to be nominated). 

Funding Amount: $33,000 toward stipend, $10,000 to Columbia 'in lieu of tuition', & $3000 to student plus $4000 to advisor for research/education.

Application Deadlines: Columbia must nominate by Oct 18; Columbia will have an earlier internal deadline to apply to be nominated. If nominated, application due Jan. 3.

NIH NRSA awards

Apply after finishing 2nd-year grad, (i.e. after passing quals). As a grad student here we will guide you in applying for NSF and NRSA awards.

Funding Amount: $25,320 annually
Application Deadlines: Deadlines for applications are April 8, August 8, and December 8 each year. 

NSF fellowships 

You can apply as an undergrad senior and/or post-college, but only once as a grad student, either 1st or 2nd-year. Our students typically apply in their 2nd-year.

Funding Amount: $34,000 annually
Application Deadlines: The application deadline is at the end of October (view website for dates for each field of study).

DOE Computational Science Fellowship

Apply when applying to grad school or as a 1st-year grad student.

Funding Amount: $36,000 annually
Application Deadline: Online application open in October and close in January. 

Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity (formerly known as National Physical Science Consortium Fellowship)

"Applicants at any stage of their graduate program may apply, as long as they will be available to accept two summers of paid internship." Requires an employer-sponsor to choose you, and you have to intern with them for two summers. 82% of fellowships go to women and/or minorities. 

Funding Amount: $20,000 (years for initial support vary, see fellowship info)
Application Deadlines: Applications open in late August and close in December.

Hertz Foundation Fellowship

Apply when applying to grad student or as a 1st-year grad student (rare exceptions for more advanced students, see FAQ).

Funding Amount: Up to $250,000 (see compensation section for funding options)
Application Deadline: Applications open in August and close in October. Fellowships are awarded March.

National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowships

Apply when applying to grad school or as a 1st- or 2nd-year grad student (rare exceptions for more advanced students). Open to all of neuro/cognitive science. You need to discuss "how your research might be of interest to the Department of Defense (DoD)", but there is no service requirement of any kind associated with an award.

Funding Amount: $38,400 annually
Application Deadlines: Applications open around September and close mid-December.

Soros Fellowship For New Americans

For immigrants or children of immigrants (both parents must be immigrants) who now are citizens, permanent residents, or have or had DACA status. Apply when applying to grad school or in 1st or 2nd-year of grad school.

Funding Amount: Up to $25,000 annually
Application Deadlines: You can apply from April - October.

Ada Lovelace Fellowship

A three-year fellowship for Ph.D. students at North American universities (international students eligible) who are underrepresented in the field of computing and pursuing research aligned to the research areas carried out by Microsoft Research. Apply after completing your first year.

Funding Amount: $42,000 over 3 academic years
Application Deadline: Nominations from the university are usually accepted through mid-August; proposals accepted through mid-September.

Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM) Special Interest Group on High Performance Computing (SIGHPC).

ACM SIGHPC has created the Computational and Data Science Fellowships, a continuation of the program started with Intel to increase the diversity of students pursuing graduate degrees in data science and computational science. Specifically targeted at women or students from racial/ethnic backgrounds that have not traditionally participated in the computing field, the program is open to students pursuing degrees at institutions anywhere in the world.

Funding Amount: Adds $15,000/yr for 2 years to your stipend, but otherwise does not pay for tuition/fees/stipend.
Application Deadline: You can apply from mid-March to mid-April.

Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation Fellowship

This fellowship appears to be only for experimentalists; looks like you can apply when finishing undergrad or in 1st or 2nd-year of grad.

Funding Amount: Monthly stipends vary based on location and circumstances.
Application Deadlines: The deadline for the application is February 1, June 1, and October 1 of each year. 


The Facebook Fellowship is a global program designed to encourage and support promising doctoral students who are engaged in innovative and relevant research in areas related to computer science and engineering at an accredited university.

Funding Amount: Two years of paid tuition and fees, a $42,000 annual stipend to cover living and conference travel costs, a paid visit to Facebook headquarters for the annual Fellowship Summit, and various opportunities to engage with Facebook researchers.
Application Deadline: October 1.

GEM Fellowship

For under-represented minorities; must be US citizen or permanent resident. Must apply at same time as applying to graduate school, it appears. Requires one summer internship with an employer sponsor.

Funding Amount: Provides tuition, fees, and $16,000 toward stipend for 1 year.
Application Deadline: Application opens in July and closes in mid-November.


The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourages people of diverse backgrounds to apply.

Funding Amount: Up to 3 year Fellowship. Full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment.
Application Deadline: Application window is open until September 30


The IBM PhD Fellowship Awards Program is an intensely competitive worldwide program, which honors exceptional PhD students who want to make their mark in promising and disruptive technologies. Focus areas include the following topics of particular interest: AI / Cognitive Computing; Cloud / Open Source; Data Science; Internet of Things; Quantum Computing; Security / Cyber Security.

Funding Amount: The two-year IBM PhD Fellowships includes a stipend for two academic years ($35,000 each year), and, in the US, an education allowance for year one ($25,000). 
Application Deadline: Nominations for the annual IBM PhD Fellowship program begin the 3rd week of September and are accepted for 5 weeks


The Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship has supported hundreds of fellows over the last two decades, many of whom have gone on to work within the Microsoft Research organization. Others have gone on to perform pioneering research elsewhere within the technology industry or accept faculty appointments at leading universities.

Funding Amount: Tuition and fees are covered for two academic years. A $42,000 USD stipend is provided to help with living expenses while in school for two academic years.
Application Deadline: Nominations from the university closed mid-August 14. Proposals and letters of recommendations are accepted through late September.
